Franklin, The idea
has a tremendous amount of merit and is a driving force behind many “Farm Link”
programs across the US. The idea
is to link aspiring farmers with those that have land for farming. Many programs offer additional
technical assistance and education to help ensure that farmers remain viable
once they are on the land. Our
program in Washington State has many current and beginning farmers looking for
such opportunities. The
National Farm Transition Network maintains contact information for participating
farm link programs. Visit their
website to see if there is a program near you: www.extension.iastate.edu/nftn/natlfarm.gif
(click on Network Participants).
If you don’t have such a program in your or a nearby state, there are other
good places to network – local cooperative
extension, grass roots ag support groups, local farmers markets, and community
colleges or other educational programs that provide ag training and education. There are
also apprentice placement services that could help you find the person with
market farming experience you are looking for. Appropriate
Technology Transfer for Rural Areas (ATTRA) maintains a database of sustainable
farming internships and apprenticeships, as well as educational and training
opportunities through the National Agriculture Library’s Alternative Farming
Systems Information Center (AFSIC).
You can visit their website
for more information and download their current opportunities in PDF format at http://attra.ncat.org/attra-pub/intern.html. Willing
Workers On Organic Farms (WWOOF) is another exchange. They can be found at www.organicvolunteers.com. Here in
Washington State, Washington Tilth Producer’s maintains an apprentice placement
service. There may be similar
services in your area that offer you the opportunity to specify the type of
help you want to receive. To see
what types of opportunities they offer, visit www.tilthproducers.org/placement.htm. Regards, Mary E. Embleton,

at www.cascadeharvest.org -----Original Message----- Hi all...would like some thoughts and ideas from you
folks....I'll try to keep it short and brief..:-) My son... daughter...and I would like to get into
market farming...but don't have any background except home gardening. We have
at least ten acres out behind our homes that slightly slopes to the
south/southwest. Was farm fields at one time...but now covered with junk pines
and other type trees...most of which are around twelve inches in
diameter...give or take. A stream borders the western boundary...so there is
water year round. I plan on clearing this land and stumping it with a rented
excavator....maybe two or three acres to start....then rent a dozer with root
rake. Now the question...what do any of you think of taking in a partner
that has training in market farming....either a recent graduate from
school...or a farmer with knowhow? Someone that could help with the planning
and work...right from the start....then share in the profits down the road. I
know this is a loaded question...but the idea sounds like it has merit....what
do you think? Franklin |
