Hi, Folks!

I have completely had it with the deer at the community garden, so I've been thinking about getting a dog to run them off and perhaps train it to do other useful things around the garden. Now, since the kids who live at the housing project where the community garden is located aren't allowed to have dogs, they will go *nuts* if I get one, so I have to get a dog that won't mind being fussed over by small children at the drop of a hat. Since the dog will live at my house, it also have to be nice to my two cats.

I was looking at the "sporting" breeds, but my farmer friends say that I want a herding dog. I did some web research and thought that Bearded Collies looked like the best combination of intelligence and love of people. However, puppies are $1000 each and the waiting list for rescue is quite long.

So, how did folks on this list pick a dog? Did you pick a purebred or a mutt? Puppy or older dog? From a breeder or a shelter/rescue?

I'm open to suggestion here. . .
