Ten years ago, I had just had my cocker spaniel put down, and needed another
companion... AND, had a two year old daughter, I did the research and came
to the conclusion that Goldens were the way to go with where our family was
at the time. I admit I was a little biased having grown up with a Goldie
...
Little did I know when I bought this golden girl that I was pregnant with
daughter #2. My goldie has been a wonderful companion with my girls. ..and
my girls learned how to treat a dog with love and respect.

I cannot let my goldie outside unless she's on a leash as she'll chase
anything and everything, and forgets to come back. She is very wall
mannered, except that recall thingy...LOL
I know it's my fault as when I should have been working her on obedience, I
was going through a very difficult pregnancy.
Goldens are great companions and rotten guard dogs :-)
.. one time my step father said he'd been by when we weren't home.. and
told me "that's a heck of a watch dog you got there"
I smiled and said "oh yeah, she wouldn't let you in the house, init?"
He smiled and said
"oh yeah, she watched me open the front door ..
watched me turn on the T.V...
watched me lay down on the couch..
and then she came on over and snuggled up to the couch and wanted her ears
scratched, yep....
that's a heck of a watch dog you got there!"

A bit over a year ago, my dh spent a year 3,000 miles (seems that far
anyhow:-) away from us "girls". Some friends of ours insisted we take on of
their pups. Soon, we became a two dog owner. The new puppy grew fast. He
now weighs over 100# and is the biggest sweetheart ! He is 99% outdoor
..not housebroke and doesn't like to come into the house except, the 1%, to
jump on our daughters bed ..LOL..
His job is to protect girls and gardens from dangerous deer and rabbits.

This year for the first time, my roses have bloomed and bloomed. The deer
have not bothered one thing! We do not have a fence except around a small
50' X 50' vegetable garden. Valter has been a wonderful addition to our
family...except when the neighbors drive by..and he thinks he needs to go
escort them from their car into the house (they think he's cute)

One piece of advice. Insurance companies have a list of "bad" dogs, and if I
(and perhaps you) own a breed of dog on that list, they won't write the
insurance. At least that's what our agent told me.. then he asked what
breeds of dogs we own, I told him a Golden Retriever and a crossbred white
mop <G>..I was telling the truth.
Valter's mom is a Maremma..and his Daddy was a Komondor that was found dead
one morning, surrounded by 16 dead coyotes... he's still a crossbred giant
white mop!

okay..one other thing <G>.. perhaps a google search on Bearded Collies will
bring up a Collie rescue! <G>
I think petfinder.org ... or maybe it's petfinder.com will help?
