After the bulbs are planted, unroll a bale of hay over the bed and you've got it mulched. I thought it was a great idea. Now, all I need is a bale unroller!
Pardon me if I'm missing something here, but if your bale is not too old or too weathered, you should be able to simply (you and your friends, of course) roll the entire roll down the length of the bed, letting it unroll as you go. If you're lucky, the one layer will be thick enough, if not, just spin the bale and roll back the other way. A good bale unwinder costs a lot of bucks and would actually create more work than there is with this method, IF you can get a few more helping hands (or your tractor can straddle your bed as you bunt the roll down the garlic bed.)
