I've been able to deal with small patches (say, 20' x 20').
One method I've used is to give the soil a stomachache by tilling in large amounts of organic matter (peanut skins). Nothing grows for several months.
Another method is to mulch the area with overlapping carboard and hay mulch for 1-2 years.
(And I've also combined the two methods.)
