Alison & others- You go girl!
We had a growers only market with only a few local growers, so we included a
rule
about resale for marketing co-ops- small farmers who were distant could form a
marketing agreement and rotate coming to market with each others' farm
produce.
This expanded the no. of growers. We required a document from the group with
info
on each farm, their rotation schedule and an affidavit saying they sold only
each
others' produce- with the wording that violation of the rules by anyone got
them
all (in the co-op) kicked out.
We are struggling here with the same issue again- There's a producer of
organic
cotton clothing who wants to vend/educate at our market. Fine with most, but
we're split on him selling organic citrus. His position (which I agree with)
is
that citrus will never be grown locally (no competition with local growers)
and
that he's a member of IFOAM (Florida organic growers assoc.) and will only
resell
from those small farmers.
Having produce not grown here and from small farmers can only enhance a
market,
according to me and the cotton man. There are others who see any reselling as
bad. I even suggested a parallel (right next to us) market for these things-
clearly delineated.
What do you guys think would be appropriate for such items?
