I too want to object to the blatant condemnation of extension.
Because my husband is involved in it, I too am familiar with extension
policy and agents. Yes, many are steeped in "conventional", poison stuff,
but that does not describe them all.
In addition, extension does other things - very helpful to the community.
Business counseling, land use education etc. etc. My husband was just at an
all day conference yesterday that he helped to organize to help towns deal
with big farms in their towns - concerns that come along with big farms,
zoning regulations towns might want to consider, etc. etc..
My husband is a rare gem, - an advocate of local food systems, land use
planning, sustainable agriculture, freedom of speech (I requested
information from the Virginia extension agent that had been fired, and
passed it on to my husband - he is holding a workshop at an extension
conference about being an extension agent and freedom of speech....), etc.
but I know of others that have lots of valuable viewpoints and information
to offer as well.
In addition, we can be resources for ag agents - because the organic,
sustainable stuff isn't as available to them unless they go searching - so
we can help make them aware. Once they are aware, they can spread the word
to those who are seeking. Extension has a newsletter in this county, and I
am sure that any events that we have coming up, they would let us put in
there......
