Reading Del's story really made me thankful for spending the many hours
setting up our Farmers' Market. Quick fixes can never replace good planning.
Only market members can sell produce that they grew. If a local grower
is selling for another local grower, both must be registered members of the
market association. The member elected board reserves the right to admit new
vendors. As part of the association registration all growers consent to
board inspection of their growing operation. You can't sell what you didn't
grow. Failure to comply with this rule terminates your market membership and
selling space at the market.
The mission of our market association is to "Support small, direct
marketing farms which are the very best engines for generating and recycling
dollars within our community's economy while capturing some semblance of
Bainbridge Island history by preserving local farming activities."
Booth prices are rising proportionately with the average gross sales of
vendors.
Crowds have flooded our Saturday Market to the point of making a Wednesday
evening Market feasible. People still complain that the rules are
restrictive and hurt the small back yard grower. But it seems to work for
the community. Which is largely the reason we exist.
