Hi Allan, We have a 574 International with a hydrostatic transmission and it
is a lovely
thing to have if you need to go really slow and keep the power. The engine
speed can be
throttled up to what ever rpm needed to do the job while going incredibly
slow -much
slower than possible with a "regular" transmission on low 1. This comes in
handy while
using the transplanter and turning compost. They are more complicated to
service tho,
having more filters.
We also have a 1950's farmall super C with an underbelly mount that is fitted
with a
buddinghing basket weeder-this hoes our 4 row beds very efficiently.
If you have a large garden (more than 5 acres) you may want to consider the
under belly
hydraulics which is available in new tractors too (Kubota) for mechanical
weed control
-basket weeders, cultivators, lilliston rolling cultivators , finger
weeders,etc and are
much more precisly controled when directly under the tractor.
