Dave, for many of us it is not the "fact" that radiation treatment for
meats will cause the product (mostly ground meat and chicken) to itself to
become irradiated. At a very low level that may or may not be the case
with gamma radiation. What is certainly true is that at the cellular, and
perhaps molecular, level the radiation, either by radio activity or
electron beam, causes physical changes. It may or may not be dangerous but
it will change flavours and textures. Some of us will notice that, some
will not. As long as the processors put a label on it we can each make our
own choice whether or not to consume the meat. That is, at least, a step
better than the genetically modified foods which are slipped into the food
chain unmarked and unheralded.
