For the hens' protection. I've seen too many mishaps where the
roosters' were not aggressive enough to protect their hens.
My most aggressive rooster was the still alive after our wild dog
massacre. Lost over half his feathers, several 6'' gashes, torn comb,
severely mangled leg--yet he was still alive and in the coop where he
tried to gather the hens. I put him down with great sadness even
though I bore (& still do!) the scars from his attacks. He was just
doing his job. Unfortunately, this time he was outnumbered.
