This is a good point, Pete, and one that I think hasn't been noted earlier in the thread. There was a study in which 100 soil samples were sent to 100 different testing labs. The results plotted as a bell curve on a graph--a pretty *graphic* illustration of the fact that any soil test is at best just a hint (and probably at worst misleading, maybe deliberately so, a con to feed the soil with NPK magic).
