Living in another country has made me look carefully at what freedom is and
how it differs form place to place. I think people in the States tend to
think of it as an absolute. In reality anyone who lives in a society must
give up some freedoms in order to reap the benefits of cooperation. This is
an age old balancing act which generally has come down on the side of society.

One of the problems here in Colombia is that people are accustomed to a
relatively weak government that has not been able to enforce a lot of good
laws. People here resent infringements on their "freedom" that are par for
the course in the States.

Freedoms are generally desirable as long as they allow people to live and
work together and create a better life than would have otherwise been
possible. I think it is really important to look carefully at our assumptions
even when they go down to deeply held beliefs and prejudices. My own
preference is for maximum civil liberties even when it hurts at times. I also
believe that laws should be obeyed by all out of a realization that they are
how we live in a complex society. When they are wrong they need to be
challenged.
