That is very true and does not even take in the cost of having to take it to a shop for repairs due to complicated electronics.
 
There are also things that can be done to get the mileage and drivability up on most older vehicles such as HEI distributors, if not so equipped, water injection to allow advancing the timing and even hydrogen on demand to get a synergistic effect with the fuel.  All cost some but will payback while a new truck won't.  Dean

That very thing was discussed on CNN a week or so ago. The dealer said that by trading they reduce their gas bill but the vehicle payment went thru the roof.  He said at the end of a given period of time, their transportation cost would be lower driving the gas gussler.
