On that subject of "non-traditional" foods we've barely skimmed the surface
on this list and we should probably go into a lot more detail, hmm?

I recommend getting to know the permaculture concept of the "edible forest garden," which features use of many, many unconventional crops for food (most of them perennials--most of us gardeners are more used to thinking first of annuals when we think of food production).

My article at
http://themodernhomestead.us/article/Natural+Forest.html
sketches the basic concepts and describes the small beginnings we have made here at Boxwood. To really dig into the subject, though, see Jacke and Toensmeier's EDIBLE FOREST GARDENS, a huge (and hugely important) work in 2 volumes. The appendices alone are worth the (considerable) price of the books.
