I forgot to point out one key issue: it's my only compost pile. I'm in a rental, so I can't do what I want: I'd have to reclaim space from existing lawn, and as much as I'm tempted to, the landlord has a lawn fetish (as does everyone else around me- Stepfordville!) :-(

i replaced some lawn in the back yard to put in a veggie bed. i know that makes me a bad tenant. but, i think we're headed towards crisis, and the need to figure out how to grow food trumps the owner's desire to keep a lawn in my book.

i may have to take my lumps, but i'm planning on just re-sowing it a few months before i leave...

so ask yourself how serious things would have to be before you just went ahead and replaced that evil lawn.
