I forgot to point out one key issue: it's my only compost pile. I'm in a
rental, so I can't do what I want: I'd have to reclaim space from existing
lawn, and as much as I'm tempted to, the landlord has a lawn fetish (as does
everyone else around me- Stepfordville!) :-(

So, to rephrase my question: can I just pile new material on the existing
growth, or should I look to first nix the existing growth?

My interest lies in whether, nutrient-wise, allowing the potatoes to grow is
better than not allowing them to grow. And then there's my dilemma on what
to do with any new compost material that would otherwise be destined for the
pile...

Why not let them grow? You'll have potatoes later. I've
harvested tomatoes and peppers from our compost heaps.
