A friend of mine [who is an expert on these things] offers the

WDS is what you're looking for. It allows you to "extend the range"
of existing wireless networks using other wireless access points.
Apple's Airport Extreme and Airport Express both support it and I know
that the newer Linksys devices do too. Basically, it joins the new
wireless access point into the network as a bridge on the same network
and allows clients to associate with whichever device gives better
signal and allows the second wireless access point to draw it's
network connection from the existing access point with a hard wired
Ethernet connection.

Problem solved. May involve replacing the existing access point and
adding an access point (so not super cheap), but much more reliable
and elegant than an antenna.
