the case: a working wireless network using a single linksys wireless router, but part of the house that beyond the fireplace and chimney is in a dead zone. machines involved are all powerbooks with airport (not airport extreme) cards.

goal: to get beyond the bricks.

solutions?
second wireless router? probable double nat difficulties
add antenna to linksys? suggestions on how?
move linksys? maybe but not easily
go with 802.11g transmitter? even tho the laptops have only 802.11b will it work?

Pick up a second WRT54G. Pick up two if you don't have one already and ditch your old one. You can do an amazing number of different configs with these boxes.

1) Two Networks - one can act as your main gateway sitting between your internet connection and the house network. The second, connected by cat5, can act as a second WAP. You effectivly have two WAP networks in your house and you switch between them depending on your area. This isn't as bad as it sounds when you consider how easy OS X makes to join a wireless network.

2) One network with WDS - The WRT54 is very hackable. You can download various 3rd party firmware updates that will allow the WRT54G to do things Linksys never intended. Possible uses with 3rd party firmware: violate FCC rules by boosting the power, use one as a wds (wireless network repeater) for a single WLAN across the entire house, setup full DNS and DDNS services running on the main router, use an iptables firewall, run a ntp server, etc. So basically you will have one WLAN where one router functions as the main gateway and the second router functions to extend the WLAN.
