While instant runoff voting would be an improvement, there's a better
method, and it's shockingly simple. Approval voting - simply being
allowed to vote for more than one candidate - would accomplish the same
thing and much more.

If you're interested in this, please take a few minutes to check out
electionmethods.org and read their technical evaluation page. IRV can
cause results to be really wonky, and they've got an example of that.
