There is STILL something like the original sonicnet offering. Launch.com,
which
is actually now a yahoo property. Based off the same idea as Sonicnet, you set
up a few artists/genres that you like based on a sliding scale (pretty cool
widget when it first came out in 1998, still pretty cool now), and, as the
music goes on, you rate the stuff you like and block the stuff you hate. What
you have to deal with is the occasional 30sec ad, and when Launch pushes a new
artist onto your playlist. Occassionally. And if they suck you can just block
them. As it is, I mostly get good stuff I want, lots of Ani, Murmurs, Weezer,
Cornershop, Pogues, some new stuff that resembles Green Day or Blink 182.
Anyway, it's pretty much what I've stuck with exclusively (tried shoutcast,
WCPE, KING, a few other college radio streams) and it's served me very well
over many years.
