At the last Internetworkers meeting Gina was talking about her favorite online radio station, and I was thinking other people on the list would have good recommendations for music sites.

I'm interested in hearing about other types of music sites in terms of getting past the concept of a pre-programmed station. Craig D. and I have been talking about the concept of a user-configured radio station, where you pick a certain percentage of artists or tracks, and the system adds a configurable amount of stuff it thinks you would like, augmented by a specific amount of wildcards. As far as I know there's nothing out there like this.

In any event, here's some of the sites I have used that support both Linux and Macs:

mp3.com - They allow you to register CDs that you own, and then listen to them anywhere. Its a neat concept, except they only have about 20% of my CD collection available. They also have a database of the lesser known artists where you can listen to their music and buy CDs. I've found a couple of new artists I like, but you have to go into the site specifically looking for new artists, since anyone you've heard of probably isn't on there.

www.spinner.com - They have a bunch of traditional radio stations, but the individual stations are great. My favorite is the "fusion" station. They use a RealAudio player, and the audio quality could be better.

www.live365.com - This is an interesting new business model where individuals set up their own radio stations. There's a bunch of interesting stations on here, but unfortunately most of them are just two hour loops.

The rest of the sites are listen to are just the internet versions of "real" radio stations for WYSO, WSHA, and WUNC.
