I just went back and dug out the email in which I was told that Online had
been whacked. I received it 14 Nov, 2000 from a friend who's a tape
editor at WRAL.

I've included that portion just about verbatim.

Well, the day after Election Day (which might as well be called The
beginning of Election Season these days), we had a staff meeting. Of
course, it's the only one that I miss, and it's the one with
interesting info. Anyway, CBC (read: Goodman) has eliminated the
online department, instead contracting out to a company
based in Minneapolis that does other TV Station websites. The entire
department was laid off, but not everyone knew yet. We were down a
couple of people, so that's only 9 people, but still. The idea that
the pink slips have begun has everyone on edge. For the last year,
it's been savings by attrition - positions that were vacated over a
year ago still haven't been filled, but now it's gone to a whole new
level. Anyway, the new company will be hiring two or three people to
work out of the station, everyone else will be gone. They got 12
weeks notice, and a nice severance package (4 weeks of pay for every
year they had been employed, 6 months of health coverage while looking
for work, and full vesting in the profit sharing). Kinda makes me wish
I had applied for that last full-time position back there. Then I
wouldn't have to stay in this quagmire until I was vested!

There you go. I remember them being a little tight-fisted while I was
there, but I guess it's only gotten worse.

Whee.
