Keep the first part the same -  earthnsky AT hughes.net
That's what I've done in the past.
Shoot out an email to all your contacts.

And the side benefit.......... SPAM goes away for a while.... :-)

Thanks for all the skype and magicjack info...I'm not sure which way I
will go yet, but I appreciate all the feedback.
Ron went over to the Skywave office and no big surprise here-it won't
work in our area.  "You ain't gonna get nothing out there!", he said,
like we don't already know that.    So, I am back to Hughesnet or dialup...
You what I really hate about changing over to Hughesnet?  I will hate
giving up my email address.  I've had the same email address for almost
15 years....sad.

I've been cut all the way down to zero on occassion.... LOL.
Sometimes rapidly incoming voluminous data is totally out of my control and
in a few minutes period exceeds a whole days worth.  Fortunately not often.
When that happens I don't even know it until the clock turns over into the
next hour.  I know what triggers this now, so I try to avoid those situations
when possible.
The upside, Hughes has one "free cookie" a month (i.e. you can reset your
threshold once free per month), and you can purchase additional day on
occassion if needed.  For most users it is unlikely you'll hit the threshold
(exluding music and movies of course).

I'm coming in late on this and only had time to skim the thread, so
sorry if I'm out in left field.

I'm out of DSL area and I use Verizon over my blackberry as an
Internet connection  for work (I work at home). Some days I can get
calls here on the cell, some days not. Email usually comes through.
Internet connectivity can be variable. It's never as fast as in town,
town is never as fast as in Richmond or Lynchburg. Some days Internet
connectivity is really slow to non-existent. I really varies. I've
considered satellite, I wish my employer would at least split the
cost, but they insist on the blackberry.

I've investigated satellite, options seem to be Hughes or Wild Blue.
Wild Blue is resold by Dish at a discount if you are a Dish satellite
TV customer. The big difference in the two seems to be the "Fair
Access Policy".

Fair Access penalizes you if you download over a preset amount of data
in a 24 hour period. Last time I checked, I liked Hughes policy on
this better than Dish. Dish penalizes you for the remainder of the
billing period, Hughes penalizes you for the following 24 hour period.
The penalty is to cut your download speed, some people say they get
cut down to near dial-up speeds.

Try Mozilla's THUNDERBIRD email program (FREE).  You can set it up to go
fetch and retrive your mail into a mail program similar to Outlook, etc.

For those who need encryption, secure ID, public keys etc stuff, you can do
that also.

It can retrieve gmail, and other mail (i.e from hughes, and other ISP
providers), however, can not retrieve Yahoo Mail, unless you pay yahoo the
annual fee to upgrade to that service.

On the gmail thing, I too switched to gmail some years ago with the
idea that no matter which ISP I switched to, I could retain my email
address and thus avoid the headaches associated with switching
addresses. I'm less enthusiastic about gmail now than I was back then,
however. Honestly, if I were picking a web-based email today, I'd
probably go with something else. But now I'm stuck - my email address
is on every bit of business correspondence, etc. It would be very
difficult to change now!

At any rate, web based email can free you from being stuck with an ISP
that does not meet your needs. But there is no utopian answer to email
needs, as sometimes one web based service will fall behind another in
terms of service, and you still feel stuck! LOL!

I used to use Outlook and had problems with it. It would hang my entire
system and do other annoying things. I finally dumped that and went with
the straight Gmail web interface, but it is limited and has its own
issues. I just recently downloaded Thunderbird, however - it is still
too new to me to know how I'll like it, but so far, so good - at least
it hasn't caused a major freeze-up on my 'puter yet. If I can live
happily with Thunderbird, then my issues with Gmail will be largely
resolved.
