Ah, but they won't increase welfare payments. They are currently reducing welfare payments AND reducing what Medicaid will pay for.

Their health plans all include a 3-tiered system with the poor getting basic care only. Of course, for the wealthy there is a "premium" plan.

The end effect of cap and trade is to hike costs across the board to cover
this, the poorest will be hurt the most. Similarly, forcing health care
costs on everyone will also hurt the poor working class the most. The result
is that the amount one must make to be above the poverty line will jump
15-20 percent to cover health care alone and another several points to cover
cap and trade costs. The best answer will be to quit working and go on the
public dole, then health care is free and the govt. will raise the welfare
payments to cover the cost increases for cap and trade.

Actually he did say "skyrocket". For years environmentalists have wanted
to
force the ones causing the pollution to pay for cleaning up their act, and
I've been one of those people. It hurts when that cost is passed along to
us. If we did that with industrial agriculture, food costs would go up,
too.
We've been living large and cheap at the expense of the environment.

What I don't think Obama gets is that the people willing/able to pay more
for 'environmentally friendly' energy or food are already doing it. The
rest
will fight him all the way. Just like health insurance; if the working
poor
could afford it, they'd already have it. Forcing them to buy health
insurance (or pay a lot more for energy or food) when they can't pay the
bills they already have isn't the answer. I don't know what is.
