It doesn't. Acorn squash is 'cucurbita pepo' and butternut is 'cucurbita
mixta' and they can't cross.

Hubbard squashes are 'cucurbita maxima' and won't cross with either.

Now here's the nicely confusing part. Most summer squashes including
zucchini are C. Pepo and will cross with acorn squashes. What passes for
pumpkins
are sometimes C. Pepo, sometimes C. Mixta, and sometimes C. Maxima and will
cross within their species.

Most cushaws are C. Argyrosperma which means "silver seed" but some are C.
