I had been admiring the Lincoln 225 (coffin top) as the stick welder of
choice.  Not too expensive but seemingly versatile.  I had also crossed the
wirefeed (MIG in my mind) welders as too expensive once the gas was added..
Now, I am reconsidering that as a choice.
The Lincoln would probably require me to fire up the generator to power it
though.  I would probably not be welding where a 50 amp outlet is located.
That makes the 115 volt wirefeed an attractive candidate.
No matter which I go with, I can see the others being added to the auction
and garage sale wish list.

The autodarkening helmet makes sense as a good choice.  Without suggestion I
would hold off on buying one, when it is as a novice that it is probably most
needed.

Now the thought comes that I had considered the gas or stick welders as being
versatile enough to cut as well as weld.  The wire feed does not have that
capability, if I am correct.  If I need to cut I am considering angle
grinder, sawzall, circular saw with metal blade?  Am I on the right track?

It's Christmas Eve, so I won't be comparing welders tonight.  But I would
like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and to thank everyone for sharing
their experience and knowledge.

I agree with you 100%, I just posted those links as a starting point. I have
a nice little Clarke welder (made in Italy of all places), and it works very
well. I also have a coffin-top lincoln stick welder but I rarely get it out
anymore as most of what I break or fabricate seems to be 1/4" or less in
thickness so the wire welder does just fine. (And for me, has been much
easier to achieve nice results than with the stickwelder).

I'm going to get it. My friend is taking my truck to DC late on
Saturday and will pick it up on Sun. I've only seen pictures, but lots
of closeups of vital areas. He'll do a final look over and load it up.

I've got to start to get to work on what I need to run a insulated
flue chimney out the top of the double wide now.
