Pest companies will come out for free and give you a bid.

Home inspections cost money, generally speaking and then you have to have them come back and reinspect before you can get a clearance for all the items they noted when you sell the house.

We had contractors come out and give us bids for home repairs. Did most of the repairs ourselves and then had the home inspection done. We went through the home inspection list and then checked who had the lowest bid on the stuff we couldn't do.

I recently discovered I have a share of a remainder interest in my
grandparents' home, located 12 hours from me. No one is living there now.
My grandfather built the home himself 50 years ago, and I'd like to try
to keep it up at least until we figure out what to do with it.

Here's my problem: the house is in need of some serious maintenance. I'm
afraid there's a big time termite infestation. I had a contractor come out
and take a look. After checking out the crawl space, he said all could be
made right by little replacement here and there and presented a list of
largely cosmetic fixes to the inside, outside, and underside of the house.

If I have the pest guy investigate, I'm guessing he'll say that indeed, the
damage is from termites, but that his treatment will take care of
everything.

Who could, for a fee, tell me if the termite damage is as extensive as I
fear? Property there is not worth much, and it may well be that repairs
would cost more than the value of the house. Should I try another
contractor? Do real estate people, house inspectors or appraisers hire
anyone to do this kind of thing?
