Cathy,

You may have moisture damage rather than termite damage, but the more
likely scenario is water leaked in around the window and the moisture
allowed the termites to move up into the wall. I don't recall you saying
where the house is located but subterranean termites have to maintain a
connection to the earth to get their moisture, unless enough is provided
above grade.

As to how long the damage takes...it is anyones guess. They move fast in,
say, New Orleans but slower as you go North.

If your goal is to stabilize for now, I'd find and correct the water source,
treat the soil and leave the rest until you are the sole heir, or have a
definitive agreement on what belongs to whom.

Very few houses actually collapse due to termite damage. Again, refer to the
"order of service" previously posted, bearing in mind the actual repairs can
be postponed a long time.
