I'm not sure what their response would be if you refused, but I
suspect they would have them cut and lien your property for the
expense (if any above the value of the timber). Most of the people I
know who were contacted, responded positively and cut as proscribed.
Mostly they wanted you to cut "firebreaks" or lanes to stop the spread
of beetles. The southern pine beetle may be different from the one
mentioned in this article, but as I understand it, it doesn't travel
so far from tree to tree and can be slowed considerably by cutting
some lanes.

If cut early enough the lumber isn't damaged structurally.

This could be entirely different out there- here pines are looked at
as a crop, with little old growth. (And we've been through the boll
weevil, as well as Sherman's March).
