This thread reminds me of something I read in the old Laurel's Kitchen
cookbook. It's packed away right now, so I'm going from memory. It was
written in the 70s, and vegetarianism was not as common as it is today. If
I remember correctly, the gals who wrote that cookbook came to their
vegetarianism through religious faith (Buddhism?). They wrote that since
they avoided eating animals because of moral conviction, it seemed to them
equally immoral to eat things made to seem like animals. Reasonable, I
guess.
Something else I remember from the cookbook--there's a long section on how
one of the women took especial care of her husband by packing him elaborate
homemade lunches. Fast forward to The New Laurel's Kitchen, and they've all
ditched their husbands.
