As a generality, Mormons believe in a "living prophet", who speaks through
divine revelation, for the church as a whole. While I suppose he can speak as
the voice of God to an individual, I am not aware of many cases of this. We
also believe in personal, individual revelation. Where there are problems is
when this personal revelation goes against the teaching of a prophet. Aside
from that, there is lots of room for individual interpretation, because
everyone has different circumstances.

However, we also believe in the "milk and honey", and "meat" gospel
teachings. Some people just are not ready for "meat", and must be fed on
"milk and honey". I have some personal beliefs that, while doctrinal, are not
something I talk about in groups. I never know who is ready for "meat", and
who might choke on it.?

I had this taught to me in no uncertain terms about ten years ago, when I
brought up a concept found in the old testament. Apparantly some choked,
because a few weeks later, our stake president (equivilent of a catholic
bishop in responsibility) came into class and in effect chastising some of
the class for accusing me of teaching false doctrine.?That was the first I
had heard of any complaints.?He told the class that they had been fed "meat",
and some were only ready for "milk and honey".

It taught me to be very careful what I voiced in class.

Now, some Mormons, particularly those known as "Utah Mormons", are some of
the most judgemental people on the face of the planet. This is NOT doctrinal.
Your friends probably ran into some of these. Not all of us mormons are that
way.

Ray,

I have some friends who gave up on the Mormon Church because they were told
"it
doesn't matter whether it makes sense to you this is what you are to believe"
I
don't know how prevalent that is. Is there room for individual
interpretations?

I was brought up in a tradition that there is no individual who can tell
another
what is right or wrong. Which of course makes it logical to assume that my
opionion is only that, and I have no right to tell other people what is
right.

which are proven to harm other people.
