My perspective on income taxes has always been that if my income tax load was high that meant my income was high and I was happy about that. We are in control of our tax load; as homesteaders we all have the opportunity to live on modest income that incurs little or no income tax burden. If most people acted thusly the income tax would be abolished.
But, truth be told, we Americans have a very low income tax bite:
"For a family with one wage-earner and two children, only Iceland and Ireland have a lower income tax burden than the U.S., according to the most recent data for 2005.
"At the top, Sweden, Turkey, France and Poland impose the biggest tax burdens on families, but in most of those countries families get added social services, such as secure pensions and health care.
"Citizens in these other countries are paying more money, but they are getting more back, in terms of social programs, said Christopher Heady, head of tax policy for the Paris-based think tank Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, or OECD. Its a choice the electorate makes."

Your new passport or visa must have an rfid chip. 'new law beginning the first of this month, 2008. You need not replace until your present one expires.
I have no problem with the men who are border guards. I have a problem with the people in the gov't who employ them. They (Border guards) should guard the border, not 100 miles, inland. They should stop people who like like Mexcans around the Mexican border, and stop people who look like me, around the Canadian border. "profiling" is a good tool if done with common sense and a lack of inherent bigotry.
This h*meland s*curity mess is getting completely out of control. I like cops, as individuals , too. But I don't want them hassling me , for no reason. Bev's kid is a ssoldier, I like them , too. But, I don't want them in 'this' country with guns (unless they are trying to keep something 'out', during a national defense emergency) - And I'm starting not to trust the gov't 's idea of emergencies.
And, I d*mn sure don't want our border guards , cops, or soldiers becoming
anything like the ones in Mexico ......bobford

Yes, I think fire ants came in through Mobile or Biloxi. We have Africanized bees too.
The border patrol here just asks if you are a U.S. citizen, you reply yes and you are on your way. Not being Hispanic, I have no idea if they ask Latinos to present ID to determine if they are citizens or not. Maybe it's
more of an invasion for these folks, I don't know. The last time I went through the drug dog was very interested in my car, sniffing the tire that some local dog always pees on. The agent asked me if I lived on a farm, and I said yes, and he let me through.
I have never felt the fact they wear a gun (knowing that they are frequently shot and sometimes killed here) was to my detriment or harrassment. If I knew the chances of getting killed in my job were high I'd probably want a
gun on me too. When I've traveled to Mexico I must carry
and show a visa or passport. I have been detained much longer there.
The agent in the video was rattled because someone refused to give that yes or no. While the guy was making a point, in her head she may have been preparing to get shot and have to defend herself.
My botanical friend is only armed with a microscope and he's at a port of entry, not a checkpoint.
