Cool!
I'd guess you would see a lot of smokers in your current gig, so feel
free to use my story as a cautionary tale, not that I could have ever
been great or earned a living or anything like that, but smoking robbed
me of enjoying singing the way I could have. I have never even had the
guts to do Karaoke, for example, but I know had I not destroyed my
voice, I would have. What fun that would be.
Dr. Ray, I made all A's in high school, except for 3 classes. One was
Driver's Ed...I was speeding on the final exam and thereby ended up with
a B in the class because I failed the final. The second was Home Ec,
and the third was Chorale. The instructor had a policy that if you did
not continue with training, you would drop one letter grade...Of course,
I had no interest in music at the time-too much of a science nerd, and I
pulled the B there as well. I recall that he was angry that I did not
continue-called my folks and everything....lol.
My next real chance at learning anything came in college when I worked as a stage manager for the pop vocal group. I worked closely with the music director, and she knew that I enjoyed singing and I got some informal lessions, but that was about the time I started smoking, and well, it was just one of those opportunities I blew. Back then, I don't think I saw the link between music, math, and metered verse. Now, the more interdisciplinary I can make something the better I learn. The lack of music instruction is one of my biggest regrets in life, not that I am too old to learn, but I do believe, that like learning a foreign language, there is a prime window of opportunity that the young possess.
When I was singing yesterday, I realized that I am breathing differently and projecting better and clearer, but it just isn't right, and I know it. I wish someone like you lived closer and could tell me exactly what I need to do.

So Ray, all I know is that you are a music teacher...that's a broad
area here...can you narrow it down for us a bit? Bev, listening to
Bach's Cantata BMV 208 at present, next up Peer Gynt
