There are several things involved here, in my mind, and it may take me a
while to sort them out,
I guess, in the long run, I want to...see things ...slow down.
Minimize. Simplify.
I will be glad when we run out of oil. Not just us, but the whole world.
One thing mankind has been cursed with is ego. Other creatures don't suffer
from ego. Their aggressive posturings are for purposes of procreation. We do
it most times for one-upsmanship.
I think we're running ahead of ourselves, and need to back up a step and
take a good hard look.
As wonderful as modern technology is (for example, the way we're
communicating now), there's something in me that yearns to be closely
connected to
trees, and stone, and soil, and water and campfires. Let the technology keep
on
going, but the oil thing has become an all-consuming passion, and is eating
us
alive.
I am kind of The Chef of the Silver Valley, but the best meals I've ever
cooked have been over a hole in the desert sand - if you asked my grown kids
today, they wouldn't mention the numerous Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners
at
home, they'd remember instead those Sunday breakfasts with bacon and chorizo
w/eggs and and refried beans and tortillas and potatoes, and the aroma of
coffee waking everybody up
There was no grousing about cellphones not working or computers being booted
off line, or blow dryers malfunctioning. It was a brand new day. No
technology allowed.
I started to get 'back to the land' in the 70's. But didn't follow through,
much to my regret.
There's always hope.

I went to an interesting pioneer show yesterday. They had displays of all
sorts of crafts, antique tractors and engines, mountain men, etc. The owner
of the property likes to build and restore wagons. I watched while they put
a tire on a wheel, see my journal for pictures.

I spent some time speaking with some people and the subject got off on the
Amish. There is an Amish community north west of here near Seymour. There
is a large tool store there, much like Harbor Freight with the same sort and
quality of tools. The Amish frequent the store, there is a hitching post in
front. It was mentioned that many Amish buggies and wagons parked there are
using fiberglass for the bodies and frame for the light weight.

In regards to traveling by horse drawn wagon, US 80 runs through Seymour.
The Amish use the shoulder for their wagons and buggies while. There have
been some horrific accidents as cars doing 70 hit buggies doing under 10.
