So, then following your Ford argument to its logical conclusion, you think that consumerism is king and should be propped up no matter what the expense. Because, the only reason Ford is laying off is because folks aren't buying WHAT THEY CAN'T AFFORD!

And, believe me, *real* small businesses are NOT paying anything with loans from banks. And, having managed a "small" business that was one of those franchises that you are talking about, my store made more than enough money to pay wages and purchases and overhead. There was no need for loans to pay anything. We ran at a 35 to 42 GPA. If a franchise isn't doing at least a 31 GPS, then they shouldn't be IN business. A 31 is more than enough to pay the bills/wages AND put money in the bank!

BTW, Ford didn't "loose" anything. They didn't do what they expected and their expectations were based on the false economy of buy, buy, buy even if you don't have too subway tokens to rub together, borrow, borrow, borrow, credit cards, credit cards, credit cards.

Reality is coming home to roost!

Hey, wait a minute, James <G>. I'm as philosophically opposed to any bail-out as you. But, I am very worried about how the markets could ruin people;

I'm concerned how even small businesses, in cities, and in small towns, can function in a new economic paradigm, thrust upon them with no notice.

Perhaps the local gas station near the state line doesn't have a credit account with Mobil or BP, but I'll bet the ones in Johnson City, Knoxville, Oak Ridge, etc. will. As will the local Napa store, the the local restaurants who have accounts with food distributor. And, all of those places have employees --hard working people--who could lose their jobs.

Perhaps the trickle down theory of prosperity didn't work; but, I'm willing to wager that the trickle down of misery will be quite apparent.

I can't believe that you have no friends, acquaintances, cousins, in-laws, musician friends, etc. that are immune from such an economic collapse.

Ford lost a third of sales this quarter (announced thirty minutes ago) ford dealerships hire salesmen, mechanics, secretaries, etc. Ford could soon be gone. Those employees eat at restaurants, pay to go to lounges to listen to musicians and eat fried shrimp and nachos. It is all interconnected

I don't disagree with you. I think you are correct. I keep reading Ron Paul , WSJ, Financial Times, etc. trying to figure out how this mess could further itself without hurting people for whom I care. Right now, I don't see how that is possible. ...............bobford

To most Americans, and espcially, I'd suppose, to those
on this list, all
this blather about the big banks needing bailed out because
otherwise the bottom
rung worker will be harmed seems an odd concept .... except
maybe to Bob.

But to understand this, you have to keep in mind that the
wealthy, mainly
wealthy conservatives and Repbublicans but also most
wealthy Democrats, believe
Reagan's 'Tinkle Down Economics' as if it were
gospel, as if it were one of the
fundamental cosmic laws of the universe.

Put on the spot they (the plutarchs) would freely admit
that the money is
ONLY going to help the very wealthy bankers and their
interest. BUT, say they,
the common worker's very life and breath depends on the
wealthy 'creating'
jobs. If the wealthy don't stay wealthy, the poor, for
lack of jobs, would perish
in the streets.

The homesteading life and many other life styles like
non-debt entrepreneur,
the craftsman, the artisan, etc. do NOT depend on the
wealthy's tide that
floats all ships. </HTML>
