Hi, Bob -

I'm sure you're right.

One thing I do remember, when we lived off of Camelback Road (at 59th? On
West Coulter...) the house already had an established grapefruit tree - it
was
wonderful!

My kids breakfasted for several years on fresh grapefruit - with a little
brown sugar - broiled or not. The one thing I did have trouble with was a
Meyer
lemon - had to put it on a little 'dolly' and keep rolling it around to
various sides of the house for shelter. I wonder how it would have done in
the
ground?

Sandy, if you are in zone 9, you should be able to grow anything that the
desert soil will allow, through February. I don't know about growing
inside,
but you shouldn't have a frost before late Feb., if you are like
us.......bobf

My friend does have a greenhouse - of sorts. It's a big stuccoed room
attached to the house - much like a garage, but with a dirt floor and lots
of
windows. It stays very warm in the winter, even when the house is cold.

It has a few potted plants in it, and she blocks the door open so that the
one outdoor cat has food and shelter.

I will point up the possibilities to her. I'm trying to do everything I can
to divert her attention from the fact that she's alone now. I did stay in
her
guest house in '05 while I was making the transition from the San Fernando
Valley to Newberry Springs, but can't be with her now 'cause I have too many

critters who have their own schedules. She's about 3 miles away.

If anyone has any suggestions regarding what would grow in our zone, in a
greenhouse, in the winter, it would be appreciated.

Winter is when northern gardeners sit by the fire and read seed
catalogs. It's one of the great joys of rural life. I always plan a
bigger garden than I could ever possible take care of.

I do have a greenhouse, but it's more for starting plants in the spring.
It doesn't make sense to add expensive heat and lights for a few
tomatoes in the winter. I do grow figs in my greenhouse; I love them but
they need the extra winter protection to survive...the unheated
greenhouse is a zone 7 or 8, while outside is a 4 or 5. The figs go
dormant, but overwinter. Also fuzzy kiwis. I'm looking for other
perennial fruits that wouldn't survive outside here, but will overwinter
in a zone 7.

We grow crops in the summer and can/freeze/dry the excess for winter.
Fresh tomatoes are, alas, only available (outside the supermarket) for 3
months or so, starting with the early ones, through to the huge sandwich
tomatoes. I live on tomato sandwiches in August and September. Living
with a 4 month growing season, you learn the meaning of "make hay while
the sun shines".
