We use a drilled patio door lock on the coop nearest our house because it is a sliding glass door. It takes some dexterity for me to even open it, but probably wouldn't work as well if the coons had a way to get to it. On the coop in the sheep pen we use a regular loop latch and secure it with one of those dog leash contrivances (do those thing-eys have a proper name?). As far as I know coons do not have opposable thumbs so I don't see how they could open it, but perhaps it's the mighty lamb-o that keeps them away.

Never underestimate the power or intelligence or dexterity of a hungry coon. Do not leave lying about the key or combination to any lock. I am from Missouri so I will understand if you would like me to show you.
