I found some new ideas on catching yellow jackets:

This site describes two ways to use soda bottles:

If you drink any kind of soda, zero cost.

This one tells about hanging a piece of fish just over soapy water in a small tub. Nearly zero cost:

This one is mostly about dogs, but includes the yellow jacket trap:

Tips from Ant baits to Yellow jackets.

It appears that to get rid of carpenter bees, you need to buy (or maybe make) a trap chamber. It appears to be a board like hollow thing with holes attractive to the bees but inside is some sticky stuff, or poison, that does them in.

Male carpenter bees have a big yellow spot on their fronts and do not sting. The females do not and DO sting.

I find the advice to put a bit of Sevin dust in the hole, plug it with aluminum foil, and then putty over the hole.
