I just found the article. I've seen these horses. They are similar to the other island strain I know. the http://www.assateagueisland.com/wildlife/pony.htm If this is the type of horse is what you are looking for, you might also look into the Bureau of Land Management Mustang adoption program.

Having worked with two Assateague island ponies and one BLM mustang, I will tell you that horses that are feral into adulthood might not be the place for you to start. I have no idea what your experience level is, but they can be tough to deal with.

It's a known fact in the horse world that ponies are rascally varmints. It's a lot like dogs...the bigger they are the more likely they are to be quiet to work around. I let my 6 yo climb up my 18 hand Cleveland Bay's knees, but I wouldn't let her deal with Wild Bill the Bad Pony on her own.
