The Olympics have been all about politics since before when. China has boycotted the games in the past. Russia has boycotted the games. The U.S. has boycotted the games. Spain has boycotted the games. Switzerland, the Netherlands, Egypt, Iraq, North Korea, Nicaragua, Cuba and Lebanon have all boycotted the games at one time or another. 26 nations boycotted the games in '76.
The Olympic Committee has banned varius countries.
And there really is nothing pure about the games. Every single Olympics has been marred by either drugs or some other problem with the athletes or their trainers in some form of cheating. Read Giselher Spitzer report on drugging.
The Olympics and amateur sports in general make professional atheletes look like choir boys! Anyone seen what some of those kids go through to get to the Olympics. Were it for anything else it would be grounds for CPS to take those kids out of the home!
BTW, folks aren't calling for a boycott of the Olympics. They are calling for a boycott of the opening ceremonies.

Yeah, yeah yeah, I should definitely clarify what I wrote below...
I listen to a lot of talk radio and you hear various pundits bantering
back and forth on this topic. I was mostly regurgitating what I heard
on the radio, not stating my own position. I LOVE the Olympics. I am
one of those who will watch the games (summer and winter) 24/7. The
purity of athletic competition should not be spoiled by politics...but
people are definitely talking boycott..

This evening's news tells me that the Chinese 'government' is
evicting 13,000 families per month between now and August to
accomodate the Olympics?
Yet, I hear no murmurs of boycott...or?
I have heard rumors boycott for weeks, mostly on the Tibet/human rights
issues from Europe, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if we boycotted
them, too. We are in a financial/moral war with China, and we could get
a shot in by boycotting the Olympics.
