How expensive are jars?
Here Ball/Kerr jars are at the lowest $10/doz for pints and $12/doz narrow mouth quarts. I'm in Maine, though, and sometimes things here are subject to more shipping than they are in the gut of the country (on the way to nowhere, ya know....)

And least you wouldn't have to pay shipping.....

Me, who never, ever, throws out anything (I've had 3 fires, remember: hard to get rid of anything when it disappears on its own with distressing regularity) would clean/reuse. You do want to check and make sure they are no mayo jars someone has used as canning jars. Tight as I am, I only use the tempered glass, actual canning jars, to can in. But even if they are mayo jars or whatever, they are good storage for seed, etc.
Bottom line for me: I don't throw out glass unless it's broken. Maybe I would if I didn't dislike plastic so much.

Susan Jane, in Maine, where it's a spectacular day: about 30* and sun is out with all it's winter might.
