I always check the lids and rings when I take them off. Of course, if
they are compromised with scratches or bent or extremely rusty, I toss
them, but if they still look usable/new after washing and brushing, I
reuse them. Sometimes there are lids where I can't decide whether to
toss them or not. Those I save in a separate place and use them as dry
lids for things I keep in jars that are dry food storage, like beans,
rice, herbs, mushrooms, etc. where there doesn't need to be a bacterial
seal, just a dust/moisture seal.

The ones I had before worked perfectly and were about 20-25 years old
when my house burned down and I lost them. But right up until then
I'd used them every year and had never had a sealing failure with
them, nor had any of them needed to be pitched for bending, warping,
etc. So it's a real kick in the butt to have to replace the blinkin'
things every year.
