Thanks so much, Clansgian! This is great info that i have been meaning
to find. I grew a crop of great, lovely Bloody Butcher Corn for seed
last year, and have several gallons of it left. Think i will give
homemade masa a try very soon.
The ladies i taught today in my gardening and nutrition class had never
had fried tortilla chips before, and really LOVED them. I agree that
Appalachian folk eat from such similar foods as Mexicans, that in my once
a year class i have done Mexican every other year and they really go for
it. Today's new tastings and sniffings involved passing around Cilantro
and Mexican Oregano as new seasonings - and they really went for it. We
had such fun, and learned alot - followed by a new meal made by the 30 of
us together.
BTW, i am one of those CA'ns transplanted here who has no aim or desire
to tell folk to try it another way - unless they say they want to. I
love it here, and found a true home. My ancestors were KY'ns, since the
1800's, and i am the first generation with a bland, CA accent! It was
like coming home, tho i never knew it until i settled in.
Home is where the heart is, and not all of us want to change or
enlighten others, thank goodness!!
Thanks again,
Toni
