When we bought this place we hired a title company. Was that enough? I'm
certain that a search for liens against the property is harder than one
for deed restrictions, which are all recorded in one easy place, right?

I think the title company makes sure the seller actually owns the land and you get title insurance. If something comes up and the seller didn't really own the land you are out both the money and the land. That's why the title insurance.

I 'think' James is talking about restrictions on your land, like a restriction against sheep or pigs or whatever.

Some of the best homestead advice:

Find the best place for the garden. Build the garden and plant fruit trees
first, then build a shop, then build the house so the garden is near the
kitchen door. All other considerations are of lesser importance than food
production. Next in importance is water, but pipe laying is cheaper than
soil and sun moving. Pump from the best water source to a tank on hill
above the house. Side tap into the pipe for household and garden water.

I'd add a road or someplace to park (before spring arrives) to this list, .
