Hey, Don, I like that 1860s chicken coop pictured on your travel
journal! Looks like the roosts were cantilevered and had sloping
floors beneath the roosts so the poop would slide down. Hm, how would
one keep straw up there? Maybe they just let the poop dry. Not a bad
idea, actually. Less likely to burn plants.

Done right, that structure could qualify as a genuine Cluckingham Palace.

I liked the shape of the building but they would not let me look inside. Only one person was on duty and did not want to leave her station. If you were to line the bottom of the slope with tin, that could discourage predators.

I know Gene is looking into Ram pumps and I think several others may be interested. Today I looked at some home made ram pumps, made from plumbing parts. These would be good to experiment with. The name is:
Erosion Free Water Rams
Don Price
563-519-0248

He said that a ram needs a minimum of three feet of fall. Lift water is proportional to fall. For 10 feet of fall, if lift is 50 feet, the output will be 1/5 the input water, for 100 feet the output water will be 1/10 the input water. Five feet of fall will be half that and three feet will be one third, 20 feet of fall will be double and so on.

I picked up a bike off freecycle from a homesteader in Southern California. She told me the problems with getting a Rabbi to watch over the kosher butchering of a sheep. She was told that she could do it herself and call it Kosher.

From the rabbinical standpoint, what makes something frum (not kosher) is
if you eat it. The Biblical command is to not touch the carcase of a swine,
so it becomes difficult to raise them. I understand some people in Israel,
on the kibbutzes do have hogs, but they sell them to the goyim (gentiles).

Rabbi not needed, just some study.
But, do you really want to eat animals which are raised on the feces of
other animals? When we were told it would help the protein level of our
dairy herd to feed them litter from neighboring chicken house, we quickly
turned it down.

>>Cluck-"n"-Ham Palace
>>
>>Especially if the hogs and chickens ran together.

Is that kosher?

Anybody know a homesteading rabbi?
