My guess is blossom rot..the blossom is sticking to the squash ..this
happens more if it has been rainy or really, really humid, in my
experience with squashes in general.
It could be squash bugs, too...I have had that problem.
Usually if it was something like a squash vine borer, the vine itself
would die.

They are possibly not being pollinated. You could try pollinating the
flowers yourself with a small artist's paintbrush. Just transfer pollen from the male flowers to the female (the female flowers have a
small fruit behind them).

I'm hoping some of the vast knowledge on the list can help me. We have some nice looking Patty Pan squash plants, but every time one starts to grow it gets about the size of a golf ball and rots on the vine. Our hopes have been dashed about half a dozen times so far. Any advice, suggestions would be appreciated.

SISU! (Finnish--There is no single word in English that encompasses
all that sisu means, but it combines the following ideas: guts, pep,
determination, stubbornness, perseverance, hardiness, stamina, go, do,
nerve, spunk, pluck, and grit. It's like "Just Do It!" & "Go for It!")
