Yeah, I think mother made that one, too...
Back in the days before the internet, a lot of women got recipes from
women's magazines and from newspapers and there must have been a time
when these Jello based recipes were popular in publications. At any
rate, I have recently rediscovered how much I like Jello with fruit in
it....simple pleasures....Jello is fairly cheap per serving, especially
the generic brands, and it doesn't take much fruit to dress it up....a
banana or two, a peach or two, an apple or two....yeah, it's sugar, but
it is a cool summer desert, especially topped with whipped cream. I
suppose I could buy the sugar free stuff, but yuck. If I'm picking my
poisons, I'll take the dye colors over the artificial sweeteners. :)

I know it's hot everywhere in the country, but this heat is killing me.
It's been 100+ with 50-75% humidity here in NW Georgia. My thermometer
read 103 today, but I think the official temp in town was 100. Tomorrow
the forecast is for 102, I think. I can't seem to stay hydrated, despite
drinking water all day. For those of us with bad backs and joint
disease, it's VERY important to stay hydrated. For me, it's more than
just the heat, it's the heat rashes, the headaches, the bugs, and every
critter on the planet wants water, even if it is in the form of sweat.
Wasps hover around looking for a drink-it's like all the bugs are
crawling out of the cracks in the ground. I really, really, hate to say
this, but we need the tropics to get going so we can get some real rain.
My rainwater tanks are down to about 1/3 full now, but I'm thankful that
I have them because they allow me to freely water my garden, shrubs, and
trees. I can't help but wonder what August will be like if it is this
hot in July. Tomorrow, I'm going to start drinking pickle juice. It's
an old Southern 'trick' to staying cool and hydrated. I think the salt
in the juice helps retain water-not sure what the vinegar does, but I
like pickle juice. I recall hot summers as a kid at the local pool where
dill pickle juice was sold for 5 cents for a Dixie cup full....for
reference, I think a bottle of Coca-cola was a quarter back then. Of
course, I'll continue drinking lots of water, keep a wet towel on my
head and neck, and stick my feet in cold water...all to stay cool. I've
grown up here in the South, so you'd think I'd adapt, but my genes
remind me of my Northern origins...way, way north, in the land of the
Midnight Sun.
Y'all stay cool, if you can...

Bev
