Same here...
There is also a difference in the wire not only as to gauge, but the
weld is important, too. We built some cages like Lynda describes early
on, and they have lasted well (the j-clips need to be replaced now due
to rust, but they're still holding on), but it's almost cheaper these
days to buy one because you can get baby wire or urine guards or poop
trays with them and all would be extra if you were building it
yourself-not that you *need* all that, but you might want the baby wire,
for example, if you wanted to raise miniatures for the pet trade. For
anyone considering building their own cages, I would advise to use as
little wood as possible as the urine will rot it very quickly and
wooden, hutch type cages are easily overturned and ravaged by predators
like dogs and coyotes. Also, rabbits like to chew to keep their teeth
filed down and sharp, so wood gets chewed on as does anything else in
the rabbits reach, like hoses, carpet, and such. I always give my
rabbits prunings from the fruit trees. They love that.

The wire you can buy in a roll is the same that the commericially
built cages are made of.
What's the price of wire in your area and from what source? Here the
wire is readily available in 50' rolls but it is so expensive that
the wire and j-clips still come out to well over $20 a cage,
