Thank you to all who responded to my question. I sprayed the roses last week with a week solution of baking soda after pulling off the infected leaves. New and old growth seems relatively free of black spot and mildew.

It seemed to me that some of the roses had leaves which did not wet down easily - water beaded and ran off. So, unless I hear that doing so will be toxic to the plants, I will add a drop of dish soap to the solution to help reduce the surface tension and spray again tomorrow.

Once again,
Thank you
Anna Ingre
